slo curio was founded in 2018 by g & ry roslie in Denver, Colorado with the intention of exploring a sustainable, eco-conscious way of making art and bringing fellow creatives and curious minded community members together into a live-work space to share ideas and labor of love. the pandemic forced a closure of their beloved space in Denver prompting a move back to the seaside town of Santa Barbara, California where it was re-established as a working studio/gallery. the founders, g & ry roslie have created a warm, inviting, colorful space where they continue to explore the connection between nature, art, craftsmanship and sustainability.
about the artists in residence:
g is a korean-american artist/maker with a focus on naturally dyed textile art. she works with flax linens hand dyed using earth & plant pigments which she utilizes as her canvas and palette to create what she calls ‘contemplative art’ influenced by natural landscapes, poetry, symbols, abstraction and spirit. her work explores themes of patience and the balance between solitude and belonging and finding center through being present in the world. she also enjoys making timeless natural clothing and other functional home and bodily adornments.
ry, hailing from the pacific northwest, creates both functional and aesthetic art with an eye on nature and modernity using mostly recycled/re-purposed materials. ry’s ‘highlight’ is a biomorphic art + light fixture inspired by elements of nature and is a functional art made of all natural materials. ry is also an assemblage artist working with found and cast away objects to create art that encapsulates memory past, the eternal present & unknown future.
they are committed to living an eco-conscious lifestyle and utilizes materials and processes that tread very gently on our fragile planet.
bringing more nature and natural elements into our lives, homes and workplace in the form of artistic expression is their essential practice and passion.
