g. roslie’s contemplative abstract modern textile art - ‘naturalized’

i receive inspiration in many forms whether from a beautiful natural landscape, a poem that confirms or shifts my perspective, a word that resonates deeply or abundant forms of energy that exists in this & other dimensions. wherever the inspiration stems from, this form of textile art is a culmination of many things I love including the process of natural dyeing, sewing & appreciation for modern/abstract design & art. my aim is to create a sense of peace, calm & contemplative reflection through the work i do both for myself as the maker and you as the viewer.

:naturalized ~ part of a series exploring the feminine archetype. ‘naturalized’ was inspired by the poem initiation, II which i read in my 20’s and re-read every year around the time of my birth as a kind of rite of passage, every new line earned and every experience lived through just a little more grounding.

initiation, II

at the crossroads, hens scratched circles
into the white dust. there was a shop
where i bought coffee and eggs, coarse-grained
chocolate almost too sweet to eat.
when i walked up the road, the string sack
heavy on my arm, i thought
that my legs could take me anywhere,
into any country, any life.
the air, dazzling as sand, grew dense
with light: bougainvillea spilled
over the salmon walls, the road
veered into the ravine. the world
could be those colors, the mangoes,
the melons, the avocado evenings
releasing their circles of moon.
i climbed the pink stairs, entered
the house as calm and ephemeral
as my own certainty:
this is my house, my key,
my hand with its new lines.
i am as old as I will ever be.

naturally dyed flax linen, organic cotton muslin, hardwood dowel

each textile art is made from naturally hand dyed flax linens. the backing is a natural organic cotton muslin. simple hardwood hanging frame (use two small nails on each end of the frame to hold up).

the beauty of natural dyed textiles is the variation of colors and natural imperfections that occur during the dyeing process. the perfection of imperfection, somewhat akin to the ‘wabi-sabi’ principal is very much a part of my textile art which makes it wholly unique, one-of-a-kind and of nature.

note: please keep all naturally dyed textile away from direct exposure to sunlight or harsh artificial light to prevent premature fading & degradation of fabric.
